Artist Statement
My name is Karen Gonzalez and I am currently a senior at Ronald Reagan High School. When looking at my art one can take notice on the fact that the artwork varies in medium. I genuinely like exploring new mediums and uncovering new techniques and methods as I go along. Not only am I able to enhance my skills but I take away information on many different artists. I am greatly inspired by the theme of suffering, of which I often see in artists such as Salvador Dali. My work depicts the feelings that I have inside of me, as I am unable to talk about them freely like others. Often times, my work depicts my anxieties and worries, whether it may be problems I have encountered or social issues that concern me. Art has allowed me to advocate and speak out to a wider set of audience. Although not many, I have been able to showcase my work in public areas such as the Mathis Gallery located in UW-Parkside, Walkers Point Center of the Arts (WPCA), and PyraMax bank. I have also had the opportunity of taking part in Art critiques that have taken place in Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD) as well as University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM). Furthermore, I have been fortunate enough to keep exploring Art through a pre-college program taken at MIAD and an internship with Artworks of Milwaukee. The pre-college program I took taught me how to enhance my skills in drawing as we explored the city and learned about it’s geography. In the other hand, the internship with Artworks has allowed me to learn more about photography and digital manipulation. When it comes to my future in Art, I hope that I can keep being inspired by people and mediums that I encounter along the way.
